The Great Detective

Goma Cinematheque

Fans of great detective movies with iconic characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple need to check out the films in The Great Detective, at Goma Cinema A, July 6 - September 2.

Put on your super-sleuthing hats and enjoy this fantastic selection of detective films that spans the silent era to the present day.

The Great Detective Goma Cinema

Of course there's Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, who still captures the imagination more than a century after uttering to his trusted companion, Dr John Watson, "The game is afoot".

Also afoot are other irresistible and enduring on-screen detective characters, from the professional to the amateur, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Who can forget Agatha Christie's moustachioed Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple as they solve crimes in their very idiosyncratic ways?

Then there's the master of suspense thriller, director Alfred Hitchcock, and his take on the genre with The Lady Vanishes, Vertigo, and the stunning and innovative piece of cinema, Rear Window.

Gritty procedural dramas are also in the mix, with police and courtroom classics including 12 Angry Men, In The Heat of the Night, and Dirty Harry. True-life detective work of a different kind is on display in Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich, Tom McCarthy's Spotlight and Garth Davis's emotional Australian-based film, Lion.

At the other end of the spectrum are comedies A Shot in the Dark (Blake Edwards), Clue (Jonathan Lynn), and the very stylish 1963 film, Charade (Stanley Donen) with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

Nice to know - A couple of special events have live music to accompany the silent film screenings courtesy of new scores by David Bailey performed on the Gallery's 1929 Wurlitzer organ. These are $15 per ticket or $12 for members and include the 1916 film, Sherlock Holmes, on Saturday July 7 at 11am (a film thought lost until 2014), and Sherlock Jr 1924 starring Buster Keaton on Sunday July 22 at 11am. What a rare treat!
