IRL delivers a show that resonates deeply with the awkwardness, excitement, and vulnerability of being a teenager, especially in a world increasingly defined by online interactions. IRL will make its world premiere at La Boite Theatre, from November 6-25, 2023.

Written by Brisbane's very own Lewis Treston, the creative mind behind La Boite's 2022 hit, An Ideal Husband, IRL offers a fierce and funny reflection of what it means to be a teenager in search of friendship, love, acceptance, and the elusive feeling of belonging to a community.

IRL La Boite

"Being a 17-year-old is awkward," they say. But being a gay 17-year-old cosplayer with a mild Disney Princess obsession, a TV celebrity best friend, and a first date with a shy guy you met online? Well, that takes awkward to a whole new level.

The story follows Alexei, a young cosplayer, and his long-time internet crush, Thaddeus, who are on the brink of meeting IRL aka in real life at the Supanova pop culture convention. However, in a moment of regrettable self-sabotage, Alexei assumes a false identity to test the authenticity of his would-be boyfriend, setting the stage for a whirlwind of chaos and hilarity.

Adding another layer of intrigue and laughter is Alexei's best friend, Taylor, who channels her anti-capitalist vigilante superhero persona from her TV show into reality. The line between fantasy and reality blurs and wiggles wildly out of control as the trio navigates the ups and downs of a very long, strange, and cosplay-filled day.

IRL La Boite

The heart of IRL lies in its exploration of connections, both digital and emotional. In a world where online personas often overshadow genuine human interactions, the play delves deep into the characters' desires to find authentic connections. It's a riotous and relatable journey filled with memorable characters and moments.

Under the capable direction of Matilda Award-winning Sanja Simić, the production shines. The cast's performances are impeccable, breathing life into characters who are both endearing and flawed. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, making it easy to become fully immersed in their world. The witty and clever dialogue keeps the audience engaged throughout, with moments of laughter and reflection woven seamlessly into the narrative.

If you're looking for a night of entertainment that tugs at your heartstrings while making you laugh out loud, IRL at La Boite is the perfect choice. Don't miss this world premiere production that brings the fairytales of teenage life into a delightful, real-world setting.
