Is That You, Ruthie? is a poignant masterpiece, a testament to resilience, courage, and the enduring human spirit, coming to QPAC's Cremorne Theatre from December 2, 2023.

Leah Purcell's exceptional talent as both a writer and director shines brightly in this world premiere stage adaptation, taking the audience on a profound journey through a chapter of Australia's truth-telling history.

Based on the remarkable books by Dr. Ruth Hegarty, the play delicately explores the deeply moving aftermath of a government removal policy that separated mother and daughter, Ruby and Ruthie, from 1930 to 1957. The scars left by the dormitory system's cruel legacy are laid bare, revealing a complex and emotionally charged narrative that resonates with the untold experiences of many young First Nations individuals across Australia.

The play immerses audiences in the personal journeys of these extraordinary women, inviting us to witness their struggles and triumphs. Aunty Ruth's story, entrusted to Purcell, is a living testament to the strength found in standing in one's truth, even as the echoes of history continue to reverberate.

As Aunty Ruth's story unfolds on the stage, we are reminded of the transformative power of theatre to challenge, change, and inspire.

Is That You, Ruthie? is more than a play; it's an invitation to engage with the profound depths of Australia's past, to empathise with the stories of First Nations peoples, and to contribute to a shared future shaped by understanding.
