Purple Reign 2018, by Australian artist Gary Carsley, is an immersive ‘secret garden’ at GOMA’s Children’s Art Centre, filled with images of jacarandas and interactive experiences.
The first in a series of eight artist-led projects to be presented as part of APT9 Kids, the opening of Purple Reign coincides with jacarandas coming into bloom in Brisbane.
On display within Purple Reign is the inspiration for the project, Under the jacaranda (1903) by Queensland artist R Godfrey Rivers; a favourite from the Gallery’s Collection.
The ‘secret garden’ overflows with photographic images of the iconic jacaranda in full bloom taken by the artist in Australia, Chile, Vietnam, India and South Africa. Printed on A4 copy paper in different shades of purple, the images were installed from floor to ceiling one at a time by hand.
Young visitors and their families are encouraged to re-enact the scene from Under the jacaranda with a stage-like tableau positioned opposite the painting - perfect for a selfie; while a touchscreen activity invites child to learn about six animal species that have become extinct due to changes in their habitats.
Nice to know - APT9 Kids is an integral part of the Gallery’s flagship exhibition, the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, showing from November 24, 2018 until April 28, 2019.
*GOMA is open daily except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday. Open from 12pm on ANZAC Day.
