At times during the school holidays, it's not uncommon for parents to want to lock their children up! Then make it a reality this winter, with Boggo Road Gaol's fantastic school holiday tours.
Steeped in 119 years of colourful history and with so many nooks and crannies to explore, the History Tour at Brisbane's infamous Boggo Road Gaol is a fantastic day out for the entire family over the winter holidays, and best of all, it's affordable.
The Family Packages have been created with flexibility, with one package for 2 adults and 2 children, plus a package for 1 adult and 3 children, which is perfect if there's little people having a playdate and you're keen to get them out of the house. Plus, they're ideal if other family members - grandparents, aunts, uncles - are in charge of the holiday must-do planning schedule.
Discovering and learning about the annals of Brisbane's - if not Australia's - most notorious jail and her inmates isn't just for the kids. This fascinating insight into what went on behind the formidable red brick façade is an eye-opener for all ages, and especially great if you're entertaining visitors from out-of-town these holidays and want to take them somewhere that's a little different to the norm sightseeing options.
The History Tour runs at 11am daily during the holidays and last approximately 75 minutes, taking you through jail precincts such as the heritage-listed No. 2 Division, which is still as it was when the jail was closed back in July 1992.
You will hear tales of prisoner life, riots and rooftops protests, foiled (and not-so-foiled) cunning escape plans and hunger strikes. It might even make that mischievously-spirited child in the group rethink his/her next prank and gain an understanding of the true meaning of 'consequences'! Let's hope so.
*Tickets: A $25; Conc $20; Teen (12-17) $17.50; Ch (5-11) $12.50; Under 5 yrs Free; Family (2A+2C) - $50; Fam (1A+3C) -$45. (*+ online book fee). Note that teenager admission can be included in place of child admission.
