Kedron Brook

Bikeway

This is a family friendly jaunt of around 25km return through foreign landscapes that can be enjoyed by one and all regardless of biking prowess. Better still it can be connected with the ethereal Boondall Wetlands trail if energy permits.

Car arrivals can park off Hedley Avenue and nearby historical Nundah Cemetery, the final resting place of the area’s original settlers - missionaries who travelled from Europe on the fever ship ‘Minerva’ in 1836. Had they arrived today they’d have found a small car park, state of the art picnic shelter and clean public toilets as well as a fast circuit cycling track to let off steam.

Train travellers need to disembark at Toombul and cross Sandgate Rd to Grace St then wind around to the back of Toombul Shopping Centre through the now disused car park to Widdup St, turn right and pick up the path across the road just before the Schulz Canal.

The ride itself, on flat wide concrete paths, follows Kedron Brook on its journey to the bay, skirting the 1920’s founded Nudgee Golf Club (on the site of an old award winning vineyard), Brisbane airport and passing under the Gateway Arterial. Yet there is nothing urban about these kilometres of track, passing as they do through a varied and vast landscape of salt marshes, broad grasslands, ancient looking mangrove thickets and pools that are home to a wide variety of wader birds. The distant rumble of the highways and of soaring jets only adds to the sense of having stumbled across an exclusive landscape that has escaped the urbanisation only minutes away.

The path eventually hits Nudgee Rd and it is from the other side of the road that it plunges into the Boondall Wetlands Reserve.
