King Edward Park

Cbd

This beautiful century old terraced park lies on the border of Spring Hill and the City, with the iconic Jacobs Ladder staircase leading from upper to lower levels.

Named after Queen Victoria’s son the long term king-in-waiting Edward VII, it was once flanked by the ornate grandiose Trades Hall, which ended its life under the Bjelke-Petersen regime.

Today it is a gracious green oasis featuring at its base a cluster of copper sculptures (Forme del Mitro) by Arnaldo Pomodoro, the city’s only remaining stone air raid shelter and throughout its midst a scattering of public artworks, of which the ethereal ‘Emerging Spirit’ is a must see.

On the upper level the park connects with the The Windmill (circa 1824), Brisbane’s oldest convict building with a gruesome past. Lurking behind it are two low set nursery shed-like buildings which were the city’s first inground water reservoirs, constructed between 1870 and 1882.
