Karakorum: A Musical Journey

The always magnificent Australian Brandenburg Orchestra pair up with ‘medieval world folk’ ensemble, La Camera delle Lacrime, to present Karakorum: A Musical Journey, August 7 at the Concert Hall, QPAC.

Cross from west to east and from concert hall to theatre as these two talented groups of musicians take you on a mysterious, cultural and spiritual journey that follows one man’s quest to convert the Great Khan to Christianity in the Mongol capital, Karakorum. William of Rubruck was that man, and this theatrical musical voyage is based on his manuscript and itinerarium.

Karakorum: A Musical Journey

Audiences in this country are used to hearing the best from the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra but probably aren’t familiar with France’s La Camera delle Lacrime, who perform on an eclectic range of rare instruments.

In Karakorum: A Musical Journey, they will also be joined by a small Brandenburg Choir for a performance of forgotten hymns, melodies and chants. You’ll swear you’ve gone back in time to the 13th century where Christian, Islamic and Eurasian worlds are there to be explored.

It’s sure to be a tantalising and hypnotic musical experience, which is described as “an exotic pasticcio” created by Bruno Bonhoure and Khaï-dong Luong featuring Mongolian melodies, Buddhist hymns, Sufi chants and more.

"Karakorum was perhaps the most pronounced exploration of both music and belief I have encountered." - Sydney Scoop

"The concert has an atmosphere at times of exuberance and buoyancy, but also unexpected discovery and enigmas." - Sydney Arts Guide
