With so much on offer, from family fun days and storytelling to dance, film, art and more, start planning and booking events now!
There's something for everyone - here are just a few of the events:
On Sunday, July 1 (9.30am – 1.30pm), Coming of the Light at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Fortitude Valley, looks at the arrival of Christianity to the Torres Strait. The day includes a re-enactment of the arrival, a church service, live performances and morning tea.
Brisbane NAIDOC Week launches in King George Square on Monday, July 9, 11am – 3pm. Other NAIDOC Week events include Inala NAIDOC Family Fun Day on Wednesday, July 11 (10am – 2pm) in Richlands; with community and family fun days also occurring at Taigum, South Brisbane, Acacia Ridge, and Wynnum (check the dates).
This is the 20th year of the Urban Dreaming Exhibition, so make sure you check out the Launch on Friday, July 7 (12.30 – 2pm) in Inala, or get along to the Exhibition to see a collection of artwork showcasing the talents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists throughout July.
Film buffs won’t want to miss the 10 Canoes film screenings at various libraries – the award-winning film from Rolf De Heer which is narrated by David Gulpilil and is based on an ancient story from the Yolngu People of Arnhem Land. Or perhaps the commercial hit, The Sapphires is more to your taste, in which case check it out in an open-air screening on Monday, July 9 (4.30pm) at QUT Kelvin Grove Campus. There’ll also be a panel there including Aunty Lois Peeler (one of the original Sapphires), and coffee and food trucks. BYO seating and dress warmly.
The kids will love the Skylore exhibition at Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium on Monday 30 July (four separate showings). The exhibit features some of Australia's leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders sharing their star knowledge and is an enjoyable mix of storytelling, law, science and culture.
Brisbane Powerhouse will be the venue for Whichway – Sharing through Song, on Saturday, July 7 (5 – 7.30pm). The Whichway Aunty and Uncle project brings together a prolific group of First Nation performers who will share stories, wisdom, experiences and memories. The performers will yarn and weave together the evening through voices harmonising some of the most well-known and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander songs, accompanied by a dynamic band of musicians.
A Corroboree, Bush Tucker demonstrations, interviews and panel discussions – there’s sure to be something for everyone during Black History Month in Brisbane. Bookings are essential for some events, so check out the program.
