Hallowe'en Pop Up Horror Fest

Forget the apple bobbing and get into the spirit of Hallowe’en this year with two weeks of scary movies popping up around Brisbane.

Mixing retro horror and kitsch rarities along with locally made horror features and shorts, this is a scary feast unlike any other.

The screams start at Brisbane’s one time hell hole Boggo Road Gaol on Tuesday the 22nd, where movie-goers get locked up for a night of ghosts and zombies and plays out in pubs, bars and local landmarks as well as Brisbane’s haunted theatre.

Here’s a rundown of the programme, which runs from Oct 22-31, with season tickets available:

Oct 22 - Boggo Road Gaol  Double Feature $10 includes the Illusion O ghost viewer.

13 Ghosts (1960) – William Castle’s haunted house classic shows in its original Illusion-O format, with the story of the poor family who inherit a ramshackle mansion that comes complete with a creepy housekeeper, buried treasure and terrifying ghosts 6.30pm

Evil Dead (1981) – Sam Reimi’s cult zombie classic is the tale of five friends who travel to a cabin in the woods, unknowingly releasing flesh-possessing demons. 8pm

Oct 23 – Lock’n’Load Boundary St West End  Double feature $10

The Great Disarray (2011) – Filmed on the Sunshine Coast, this survival horror epic chronicles the escape of four survivors from a doomed city. 7pm

Night of the Living Dead (1968) – George A Romero’s original zombie classic follows the misfortunes of a group of people hiding from bloodthirsty zombies in an old deserted farmhouse. 8pm

Oct 24 – The Villager 185 George St Brisbane Double feature $10.

Axed (2010) – Named as ‘the most violent zombie movie ever made in Australia,  Axed sees Bruce and his axe in a battle with a rag tag army militia hell bent on cleansing a town of all life, then the dead start coming back to life.. 7pm

Foresight Killer Instinct (2013) – When psychic Glen Parsons’ beautiful wife is brutally murdered something snaps in his brain and the forces he once used to solve crimes waver between good and evil, sanity and insanity in a wave of blood-stained violence. 7.45pm

Oct 28 – Paddo Tavern  Given Tce Paddington Monster-A-Go-Go Double Feature $10

Beach Girls and the Monster (1965) – No sign of Gidget in this retro schlock beach movie where surfers are being murdered, a sea monster is the culprit and the music is by Frank Sinatra Jnr. 7pm

The Horror of Party Beach (1964) – Sea creatures created from radioactive sludge terrorize a beach community, in a film designed to boo, hiss & heckle. 8.15pm

Oct 29 Schonell Theatre Union Rd St Lucia  $10

Birdemic (2010) – Touted as possibly the worst horror movie ever made, watch James Nguyen’s cult-atrosphe if you dare…A platoon of eagles and vultures attack the residents of a small town and people die, except for 2 brave residents who fight back. But will they and the audience survive Birdemic?  7pm

Oct 30 Room 60 Carraway St Kelvin Grove   BYO pillows & PJs.$5

Slumber Party Massacre ( 1982) – A teenage girl left at home alone decides to have a slumber party. Meanwhile a murderer with a power tool obsession has escaped nearby.. And Room 60 turns into a slumber party for the occasion. 6.30pm

Oct 31 Shady Palms 427 Logan Rd Stones Corner $6

Day of the Dead (1985) – George A Romero’s 1980’s zombie classic sees a small group of military officers and scientists dwell in an underground bunker while the world above is overrun by zombies. 7pm
