Witton Barracks

Indooroopilly

The heritage-listed former military site Witton Baracks at Indooroopilly has been transformed into a Community Hub - a revitalised space for all to enjoy.

The heritage-listed former World War II military site was returned to the community for use in March following its restoration and transformation into a space that helps residents work, connect and create in the suburbs, adding to Brisbane’s unbeatable lifestyle.

On Sunday August 31, Witton Baracks wil be hosting a free community Open Day, with live music, food stalls, kids activities including face painting and magic shows, and market stalls from local social enterprises. Residents can also learn about the history of  the Witton Barracks with free tours from the Brisbane Greeters running on demand throughout the day.

The refurbishment includes refreshing the heritage cell blocks into bookable meeting or exhibition spaces, creating a multi-use facility within the former HQ building and landscaping the grounds to include a playground and picnic shelter.

The original barracks were constructed between 1942 and 1960 and played a role in military intelligence during World War II. Since Brisbane City Council acquired the site in 2016, a range of works have been undertaken to remediate and create a practical facility that retains a connection to its past.

Good to know - Brisbane based non-for-profit White Box Enterprises is the lessee of the site, creating an inclusive hub with amenities and services that benefit all members of the community.

Need to know - The public will be able to learn even more about the history behind Witton Barracks as the site will be incorporated into the free Brisbane Greeters Walter Taylor Bridge tour in the near future.
